Abstract

Recently, the personal use of essential oils for health and well-being has become popular in Brazil. With this increase in demand, more farmers and companies entered the essential oil market for personal use. Thus, this work sought to describe the production chain and the dynamics of this market from the perspective of farmers, companies, resellers and specialists through semi-structured interviews, using content analysis, and discussing them based on the literature review. The reports obtained show that this is a complex and diverse chain and an expanding market, but that its product has been trivialized, putting the health of consumers at risk. Furthermore, a lay consumer profile has emerged, which, in general, values price over product quality. Furthermore, the existing unfair competition is dangerous for the sustainability of the market.
