Abstract

To analyze the strategies for the conversion from conventional to organic production one must consider the two meanings for the word organic: one associated to organic inputs and the other associated to an over all vision of the farm as a living organism. A ready set of recipes for the conversion process is as yet, not available. The process is a long one, involving concepts of agriculture, agricultural practices and relationship of the production system with the environment and market. Although some farmers are willing to simply switch inputs from chemical to organic type and keeping the same rational for production, the conversion process goes farther than that. It needs several other steps aiming a totally new landscape for the region. The type of process of conversion may vary according to the socio-economical characteristic of the farmer, degree of use and dependency from chemicals, ecological conditions and way of interaction with the market. The motivational reason to start the conversion process could range from a stimulus, that could be of short duration such as market appeal, or a long term reflections, consequence of a long lasting educational process.
