The objective of this work is to provide an overall view of wheat cropping in Brazil in related to its past and present aspects and future perspectives.Technical, statistical, and institucional implications of its evolution are also presented. It discusses the awakening of different sectors to a market-regulated economy, when government purchases cease, and competition in a worldwide market takes over. Concerning future involvements, it shows the importance of technology and domestic policies designed to reduce costs in Brazil, thus allowing the competition with the wheat imported from countries where the wheather and local existing infrastructure are more favorable to the crop and export operations are subsidized. A question still stands: What could be done in southern Brazil whitout wheat cropping during the winter?Downloads
