Abstract

A survey was carried out to know the methods used by dairy farmers to raise calves in Santa Catarina, Brazil. Fifty-one farmers were visited, and an interview was done each one. It was concluded that there are several methods in use. The animal performance up to 180 days is below the standard due primarily to poor feeding management. The amount of milk used is over 5 kg/d, and the period of milking is too large. Hay is used at low quantities, and ratio, when used, presents problems of quality and quantity. Most of the recommended techniques are not adopted or are incorrectly used. Housing facilities are not adequate especially concerning cleaning.
