Efficiency of insecticides on the boll weevil Anthonomus grandis Boh., (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and their effects on the cotton plant

Abstract

In order to study the efficiency of insecticides for boll weevil control, and effects on growth, earliness, and yield of cotton, a trial was made at Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil, in 1993/94. The insecticides used were: parathion methyl 480 g.a.i/ha; endosulfan 525 g.a.i./ha ethofenprox 300 g.a.i./ha; and cypermethrin 70 g.a.i./ha. All the insecticides were efficient to maintain the square around boll weevil action level. The cotton spray with endosulfan significantly increased boll number per plant, probably due to the insect control and/or due to their effect on cotton plants.
