Trends and projections of air temperature and precipitation for the municipalities of Monteiro and Patos (state of Paraíba, Brazil)

Abstract

In the present work, trend analyzes were performed using the Mann-Kendall test and the application of the regionalized climate model Eta-BESM for future projections through scenarios RCP4.5 and RCP8.5, in the municipalities of Monteiro and Patos, located in the state of Paraíba (Brazil). The selected parameters were maximum, minimum, average air temperature and rainfall. The results indicate that in Monteiro, air temperatures show significant and growing historical trends. The same behavior was observed in Patos, except for the minimum air temperature. The projections are superior when compared to historical air temperature data, for RCP8.5, and confirm the prognosis that air temperatures will continue to rise in the coming decades. In the RCP4.5 scenario, in some months, the air temperature is lower or similar to the historical period. For the scenarios RCP4.5 and RCP8.5, the projected precipitation is higher than that of the historical data in the first half of the year for both locations.
