Abstract

The objective of this work was to present the diagnosis of the purse seine fleets in operation off in the Southeast and South Brazil, characterizing the formal access of vessels, as well as the raw material supply to the market. The authorized fleet was analyzed by the number of vessels by permission type and by the physical characteristics of vessels in 2020. The supply of raw material was evaluated using the 2018 and 2019 data on fishery monitoring carried out in Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina, and São Paulo states. The activities of purse seine fleets and the flow of raw materials to the market concentrate in Rio de Janeiro and Santa Catarina states. In the last decade, the purse seine fleets expanded significantly, with a greater impact on the Atlantic thread herring (Opisthonema oglinum) as target species, especially in Santa Catarina. This fleet has less fishing capacity than the authorized fleet for Brazilian sardine (Sardinella brasiliensis) that grew at a lower intensity. In view of the catch reduction of Brazilian sardine, the main exploited resources were Atlantic thread herrings, in Santa Catarina, and Atlantic anchoveta (Cetengraulis edentulus) in Rio de Janeiro. Excess fishing capacity and disorderly use of alternative resources raise concerns on the maintenance of stocks and production chain.
